Riding A Motorcycle

I've have just below 200 miles and less than a week of riding my brand new 2011 Honda CBR250r, and heres what I have to say about being a brand new rider.

Now, riding a motorcycle, once you get used to everything and you can ride it well. (Kinda just like driving a car). It's very fun and I love the rush.  In fact, I think I've only driven my car once since I got the bike.  It's just so much fun to ride.  In my opinion, it makes you a better driver as well because you have to be more aware of what's going on in traffic.  I've been cut off many times since getting a bike, and people have pulled in front of me without seeing me.  It's a safety thing, but now I always think the worst.  I'd rather piss off the driver behind me, than having that car about to hit me on top of me.

Now, I know the reason why you see so many bikers without a helmet and gloves.  It's pretty simple.  It's annoying to keep putting your gear on and taking it off when you're going to stores.  Especially when you have a very bad helmet holder on your bike like on my bike.  When you're driving a car, it's grab your keys and go. On a bike, you have to get a routine down.  I put on my jacket, grab my glasses and gloves out of my backpack, put my helmet on, gloves, and then glasses.  I can't seem to work my helmet with my gloves on, so for me it has to be in that order.  For someone in a hurry, yes you have a bike, go fast, but this does take up a lot of time.  It's the same when you're getting off and going into a store.  Take of gloves, helmet, glasses, put it all in your bag.  There are a lot of steps.  Although I understand why people don't wear these things when they ride, it's still a part of safety.

There are many things I do miss about driving a car, that's for sure.  For one, you don't have wind punching you because you ride a small ass wanna be crotch rocket/almost street fighter bike.  I do miss listening to music.  Any of you that know me, I love long drives while listening to my favorite soundtrack. It's honestly my favorite.  I miss that when I'm at a stop light, it notices that I'm there and I'm heavy enough to set off the trigger.  On the bike, I usually have to wait till a car comes up behind me.  Also, I miss drinking my coffee/red bull on the way to somewhere.

Every morning before I go to my destination, I have to pre buy my coffee or red bull before I leave the house.  I obviously can't be riding and hold a coffee at the same time.  This goes into, "Is commuting on a motorcycle for me?"

Well, for me, If I wake up early enough, why not?  Personally, I enjoy long showers, getting stuck in traffic, sipping my coffee, and smoking a cigarette on the way to work or school.  One thing I can't get enough though is the gas mileage.  Now since my bike is brand new, it's technically guzzling gas.  Guzzling in this case is about 50 miles to the gallon on premium.  I have a four gallon tank and I'm out of the gas station with about 10 dollar.  I can't complain.

So, is motorcycling for you? The riding is faster but everything in between is slower.  I plan for now just using the bike for pleasure, and going grocery shopping.  ( I did this today, had about 50 pounds of groceries in my backpack).

Honestly though, I'm in love with it.  If money is there, and you have the time, I really suggest you look into taking a safety class, getting your license and buying one.
